BAS and GST software for Australian small business

BAS figures you can check

Kontuly works out GST on every line as you go, then prepares the figures for your Business Activity Statement: GST, PAYG withholding and PAYG instalments, with every transaction behind each label one click away. It also prepares the Taxable Payments Annual Report.

Kontuly prepares figures. It doesn't lodge. You lodge through the ATO's channels, or your registered BAS or tax agent lodges for you.

Which BAS labels does Kontuly prepare?

Kontuly prepares G1, 1A and 1B for GST; W1, W2 and 4 for PAYG withholding; T7 (or T1, T2 and T11) for PAYG instalments; and 5A, 8A, 8B and 9 for the total. Pick the quarter or month and the figures are ready.

It doesn't work out G2, G3, G10, G11, fuel tax credits or FBT instalments. If your BAS needs those, you or your agent add them when lodging.

Cash or accruals: does Kontuly handle both?

Yes. Set the GST basis when you set up the business. On a cash basis, GST is reported when you're paid or pay, including part payments in proportion. On accruals, it's reported on the invoice or bill date.

You can report monthly or quarterly, and add your own GST rates if you need a code the standard ones don't cover.

Can I see where each figure comes from?

Yes. Every label on the GST Report drills down to the transactions behind it, so you or your BAS agent can check the figure before it's lodged.

Once a quarter is lodged, set a lock date and nothing in that period can change by accident. Corrections are made as new reversing entries, so the trail stays complete.

PAYG withholding

Does Kontuly do payroll?

No. Kontuly doesn't run payroll or Single Touch Payroll. Run your pays in a payroll service, record the totals in Kontuly, and W1 and W2 on your BAS come from those accounts.

If you convert from another package, Kontuly suggests which of your imported accounts are wages and PAYG withholding, so the BAS labels keep working.

TPAR

Does it prepare the Taxable Payments Annual Report?

Yes. Flag the contractors you report, and the TPAR report adds up what you paid each of them in the year, with the GST in those payments. It also checks every flagged contractor has an ABN.

As with the BAS, Kontuly prepares the figures. You lodge the TPAR through the ATO or your agent.

Paying suppliers

Pay suppliers with an ABA bank file

Choose the bills to pay, and Kontuly marks them paid in one batch and writes an ABA file to upload to internet banking. Add your bank's details once in Settings.

ABA payment batches are in Australian dollars.

Example business · payment batch
Officeworks · BILL-0311$264.35
Southport Print Co · BILL-0309$1,420.00
Jess Nguyen (contractor, TPAR) · BILL-0305$3,300.00
Total · 3 bills$4,984.35

BAS and tax questions

Does Kontuly lodge my BAS with the ATO?

No. Kontuly prepares the figures. You lodge them through the ATO's online services, or your registered BAS or tax agent lodges for you. Kontuly isn't registered with or certified by the ATO.

Is Kontuly a full BAS solution?

It prepares G1, 1A, 1B, W1, W2, PAYG instalments (T7, or T1 and T2), 5A, 8A, 8B and 9. It doesn't prepare G2, G3, G10, G11, fuel tax credits or FBT instalments. Many small businesses only need the labels Kontuly covers; check with your agent if you're unsure.

Do Kontuly invoices count as tax invoices?

For a business registered for GST, invoices are titled "Tax Invoice" and show your ABN and the GST. Check the ATO's guidance for the requirements that apply to your business.

Can my BAS agent check the figures?

Yes. Send them the GST Report as a PDF or CSV, a backup file they can open in their own copy of Kontuly, or an export in the format of the package they use.

Will my figures always be right?

The figures are only as good as the coding behind them. Kontuly helps with GST codes on every line, rules for regular bank lines and drill-down on every label, but your business is still responsible for what's lodged. Have your agent review anything you're unsure about.
