Desktop accounting software for accountants, bookkeepers and BAS agents

Your clients keep their books. You keep your software.

When you need a client's books, they export them in your package's import format, with a READ-ME of the import steps and opening and closing trial balances to tie out. Nothing changes in your practice software.

How does a client on Kontuly work with their accountant?

The client keeps the books in Kontuly through the year. At BAS time or year end they export for your package, you import the files using the READ-ME, check the trial balance, and make your adjustments in your own software.

Your adjustments go back into Kontuly as manual journals. Export is one-way; there's no automatic round trip.

  1. OnboardYou or the client convert from their old package. You review "Agrees / Differs" and clear Historical Adjustment.
  2. During the yearThe client invoices, imports statements, reconciles and runs the GST Report. Ask for reports as PDF or CSV, or a backup to open in your own copy of Kontuly.
  3. Period endThe client exports for your package, as every transaction or one summary journal, and sends you the folder.
  4. AdjustYou import, tie out to the closing trial balance, and do your work in your package. Adjustments return as manual journals.

Export for your accountant

Which formats can Kontuly export?

Every export goes into its own folder with a READ-ME of that package's import steps and caveats. Tax shows as amounts on the GST accounts; journals are never split across files.

Your packageFiles your client sendsWorth knowing
XeroChart of accounts, contacts, manual journals (CSV)Xero imports journals as drafts, takes 300 lines per file, and won't post manual journals to bank accounts
MYOB AccountRightAccounts, customer and supplier cards, general journals (tab-separated text)Account numbers in MYOB's X-XXXX form; layouts vary by version
QuickBooks OnlineChart of accounts, customers, vendors, journal entries (CSV)Accounts matched by name; under 1,000 rows per file
QuickBooks Desktop and Reckon AccountsAccounts and general journals (IIF)IIF imports can't be undone, so back up first
Sage 50 AccountsNominal, customer and supplier records, audit trail journals (CSV)
Sage AccountingChart of accounts, contacts, journals (CSV)Chart import only works on a business with no transactions
Any other packageChart, contacts, opening and closing trial balances, journals (CSV)UTF-8 with a byte-order mark, so Excel opens it cleanly

Some vendor layouts haven't yet been confirmed against every version of each package. If an import doesn't go in cleanly, tell us and we'll fix it during the beta.
